What We Do

Encouraging. Protecting. Advocating.

Supporting the Homeschool Community

Formed in 1987 to support home educators in South Carolina and to perform a lead role in creating legal protection for home education, South Carolina Home Educators Association - SCHEA, worked with many individuals and organizations to advocate for the state legislature to create and pass the first South Carolina law recognizing homeschooling in 1988.

Today, almost 40 years later, committed volunteers from across the state continue to keep SCHEA’s mission alive and support the homeschool community by promoting a favorable image of home education in South Carolina.

What We Do

  • Keep watch over state and national legislative and policy issues and provide information about laws impacting home education
  • Advocate on behalf of the South Carolina homeschool community with the governor’s office, the SC General Assembly, the SC Department of Education, and other state agencies to create a proactive homeschool-friendly environment across the state
  • Provide support to all Option 1, 2, and 3 homeschoolers via educational seminars, training workshops, homeschool fairs, enrichment opportunities, and social media.
  • Offer individualized support and aid for any SC homeschool family, accountability association, and support group.
  • Diligently protect homeschool freedoms and the future of homeschooling in SC and the nation.
  • Maintain relevant, resource-rich website
  • Sponsor Homeschool Day at the Capitol in Columbia each year for homeschoolers to interact with state legislators and form connections across the state
  • Recognize academically gifted South Carolina homeschoolers through Eta Sigma Alpha National Honor Society.
SCHEA is a member-supported, 501 (c) (3) non-profit association serving all homeschooling families across South Carolina. We encourage homeschoolers, protect SC homeschooling freedoms, and advocate for homeschooling families as they fulfill their mission to home educate their children.
