Option 1 Overview

This option involves approval from your local school board,
SC Law Code: Section 59-65-40

Option 1 Requirements

Obtain approval from your local school board. The school board approves your application provided you do the following:

  1. have at least a high school diploma (or GED) or an earned baccalaureate degree
  2. teach your child for at least 180 days per school year for 4.5 hours, not counting lunch and recess
  3. teach the required subjects: reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and for grades 7 – 12: composition and literature
  4. maintain records:
    • a plan book, diary, or other written record indicating subjects taught and activities in which the student and parent engage
    • a portfolio sample of your child’s academic work
    • a record of evaluations of your child’s academic progress: submit to your school district a semiannual report, including attendance and assessments of your child’s progress in each of the required subjects
  5. provide access to library facilities
  6. your child must participate in annual statewide testing and the Basic Skills Assessment Program, administered by a certified school district employee or by special arrangement
  7. parents must agree in writing to hold the district harmless for any educational deficiencies, and the school district may withdraw its approval for you to homeschool if it determines that you are not maintaining these standards (if deficiencies are not corrected within 30 days)
