Compulsory School Age

Starting and stopping your journey.

South Carolina children must attend school or comply with the homeschool laws starting with the academic year that they turn 5 before September 1st.

If they are 5 but will not turn 6 until after September 1st, you may choose not to enroll them in school until the following year if you sign a form provided to you by your zoned school district. Your student will then begin First Grade the following year; this form is not a delay of the start of kindergarten. Retain a signed copy of the form for your records.

They must continue attending school until they graduate from high school or turn 17.

Instead of filing a form with your zoned school district to opt out of kindergarten, you may enroll with Option 1, Option 2, or an Option 3 Accountability Association to begin homeschooling in kindergarten.

SCHEA is a member-supported, 501 (c) (3) non-profit association serving all homeschooling families across South Carolina. We encourage homeschoolers, protect SC homeschooling freedoms, and advocate for homeschooling families as they fulfill their mission to home educate their children.
