Who Me

Homeschool? Who, Me?

They’re your kids! You love them, you want the best for them, and you know them better than anyone in the world. That qualifies you.

You don’t even need to know everything there is to know in order to homeschool. Dr. Brian Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI), explains that “the tutorial method of teaching has always been the superior method. Home education epitomizes this method, providing essentials for success – a close student/teacher relationship, family-consistent values, motivation, flexibility, and individualization.”

What does the research say about homeschoolers’ academic outcomes? Dr. Ray’s research findings include:

  • “63% of peer-reviewed studies on academic achievement show homeschool students perform statistically significantly better than those in institutional schools (Ray, 2017, 2023)
  • The home-educated typically score 15 to 25 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests.  (Ray, 2010, 2015, 2017; Ray & Hoelzle, 2024; Rudner, 1999). (The public school average is roughly the 50th percentile; scores range from 1 to 99.) A 2015 study found Black homeschool students to be scoring 23 to 42 percentile points above Black public school students (Ray, 2015).
  • Homeschool students score above average on achievement tests regardless of their parents’ level of formal education or their family’s household income.
  • Whether homeschool parents were ever certified teachers is not notably related to their children’s academic achievement.
  • Degree of state control and regulation of homeschooling is not related to their children’s academic achievement.
  • Home-educated students typically score above average on the SAT and ACT tests that colleges consider for admissions.
  • Homeschool students are increasingly being actively recruited by colleges.
  • The 35 years of positive academic findings associated with home education have occurred without the tax funding (e.g., school choice ESAs, vouchers) of homeschooling.”

And, if you’re a student of the Bible, you know God has given you not just the right to teach your child but also the responsibility. Deuteronomy 6: 5-7 reads “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.” That means you’re teaching, aka: parenting, while you’re sitting, walking, lying down, and getting up. In other words, All. The. Time.

There you have it, precious parents. Statistically, a home education is a superior education. And, statistically, you’re more than able to oversee and provide an excellent education for your children. Homeschool? Yes, you!
